1

Make it safe

  • Keep away from water near electricity. If water is near outlets, cords, appliances, or your breaker panel, stay out of it. Only shut off power at the panel if you can reach it while standing somewhere dry.
  • Stay out of rooms with a sagging or dripping ceiling. Wet drywall is heavy and can come down without warning.
  • Treat dirty water as contaminated. If it came from a toilet, sewer line, or outdoor flooding, keep kids and pets away and don’t touch it with bare hands.
2

Stop the water

  • Shut off your main water valve. Look where the water line enters your home: the garage, basement, crawlspace, or near the water heater. Turn a round handle clockwise until it stops. Turn a lever handle a quarter turn so it sits crosswise to the pipe.
  • One fixture leaking? Toilets, washers, dishwashers, fridges, and water heaters have their own small shutoff valve behind or below them.
  • Roof or window leak? Catch it with buckets or towels and move belongings out of its path.

Can’t find your valve? Call 678-DRY-PROS and we’ll walk you through it on the phone.

Protect your belongings and your claim

  • Take photos and video first. Capture the water, the source, and damaged items before you move anything. Your adjuster will ask for them.
  • Move what you can to a dry room. Electronics, photos, documents, and rugs first. Slide foil or plastic under furniture legs so wood stops soaking up water.
  • Keep damaged items. Set them aside instead of throwing them out. Adjusters often need to see them.
  • Start your insurance claim. Call your carrier, or let us help. Dry Pros works directly with most insurance companies.

What NOT to do

  • Don’t use a household vacuum on water. It’s a shock hazard and it will ruin the vacuum.
  • Don’t turn on ceiling lights or fans under a wet ceiling.
  • Don’t tear out wet drywall, carpet, or flooring before it’s documented. It can hurt your claim.
  • Don’t count on box fans or cranking the heat. Water hides inside walls, under floors, and behind cabinets where fans can’t reach. We find it with moisture meters and thermal cameras.
  • Don’t wait it out. Drywall, wood floors, and cabinets keep absorbing water every hour it sits.
